Chamber of Commerce Welcomes Ten Schools to First Annual Manufacturing Day

The Cortland County Chamber of Commerce held its first Manufacturing Day event on October 5th, co-hosted by KIK International and ALPLA in the City of Cortland.  In addition, Intertek and Suit-Kote representatives gave presentations to the group.

The audience for the event were Guidance Staff, Administrators, and Technical Teachers of our local schools.  In all, ten schools participated sending 22 people.  They had the opportunity to hear the four manufacturers give presentations and tour the facilities of the two hosts.  “It was an eye opening experience for the participants”, stated Chamber President/CEO Bob Haight.  The Chamber surveyed members about open entry level positions that our high school graduates would qualify for in the next 12 months.  The school participants were provide with a listing of 35 companies, all Chamber members, that will be looking to hire over 500 people in the next year.  “Our Chamber knows each of these companies personally and we’re happy to provide contact information and further details, including testimonials about each company”, Haight went on to explain.

In future years, Manufacturing Day will include students and we’re already working on details about how to incorporate that.  Manufacturing doesn’t look like it did decades ago and many of the entry level positions have advancement opportunities.  “These are good solid jobs that can sustain a person looking to attend college part time or for someone who would like to make a career out of it”, Haight stated.  “Many offer tuition reimbursement.  Imagine working, collecting a pay check, and getting your degree loan free.  That’s all possible”.

We already have additional schools on the list for 2019 and look forward to the program continuing to grow.
For more information on how to get involved as a manufacturer, school district, or student, feel free to contact the Chamber of Commerce.
